We have been working on one virtual server from the start. In small companies, you may get one server and you’ll have to use it as a DHCP, DNS, Active Directory and an IIS server. But in industries, each server has only one function. You’ll have one server for DHCP, one for DNS, one for file server and one for Active Directory. The question is if you have so many servers, how would you add them to your server so you can watch them and make changes when needed?
Adding a new server in Server 2012 is fairly easy. You need to take the same steps you took while adding a computer to server (Refer this post). You can decide if you want to add an existing working server or add a new server first and then decide which function you’ll assign to it. Steps for the both are same.
In this post we will add a new server, which has nothing installed in it to an existing Server which has DHCP, DNS and Active Directory.
So, lets see how to add new servers in Server 2012. Open the server you want to add:
- Go to Start –> Search and search for ‘System‘. Select settings.
- In the System Properties, click on ‘Change Settings‘.
- Enter the ‘Computer Description’ so that the server to which you’re adding can recognize this.
We will have to change its domain to click on ‘Change‘.
- Enter ‘Group Name‘ and ‘Computer Domain‘.
- Enter the ‘Username‘ and ‘Password‘ of the Existing Server to which you are adding this New Server.
- If username and password is correct, a new message box will pop up.
Restart your server to apply changes.
Restart Now.
- Select Other user while logging in again.
- Enter the Administrator username and password to log in into new server.
- Go to the existing server’s ‘Active Directory Users and Computers’. Select ‘Computers’ and check if the new server has been added.
