The difference between 32-bit and 64-bit Windows!
While downloading any software, we usually see 32-bit or 64-bit at the end of the name of the software. Why do they write that?
Software is designed for two different versions of Operating Systems.
In this post, we will see what are the two different versions of Operating Systems, how to check which version you’re using, what is the difference between 32-bit and 64-bit Windows, and what are the advantages of 64-bit Operating System over 32-bit.
There are two types of processors, 32-bit, and 64-bit.
This tells us how much memory a processor can have access from a CPU register.
A 32-bit system can reach around 2^32 memory addresses, i.e., 4 GB of RAM or physical memory.
A 64-bit system can reach around 2^64 memory addresses, i.e., actually 18-Billion GB of RAM.
In short, any amount of memory greater than 4 GB can be easily handled by it.
How to check?
To see which version you’re using
For Windows 7 and Windows 8 go to
Start –> Computer (Right click) –> System.
Installation :
- To install the 64-bit version, you need a processor that supports 64-bit version of OS.
- If you have a large amount of RAM on your machine (like 4 GB or more), only then you can see the difference between working on 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows.
- A 64-bit processor can take care of large amounts of RAM or physical memory more efficiently than 32-bit.
- Using 64-bit can help you a lot in multitasking. You can quickly switch between various applications without any problems or you windows hanging.
- If you’re a gamer who plays high graphics games like Modern Warfare, call of Duty, GTA V, or use high-end software like Photoshop or CAD which takes a lot of memory, then you should go for 64-bit Operating Systems. Since it makes multitasking with great software easy and efficient for users.
Softwares :
- Most of the programs are compatible with the 32-bit Operating system because that is the processor users have. However, apart from antivirus’ all other 32 bit programs can run easily on a 64-bit Operating system.
- But programs made specifically for 64-bit Operating system won’t run on 32-bit Operating System.
- If you’re running a 32-bit OS, download any 64-bit program like VLC and try installing it. It will give you an error right away.
Driver problems:
- If you installed a 64-bit Operating system, you specifically need to install 64-bit drivers for it, because drivers for 64-bit Windows are designed in a different way than the usual.
- So if you’re planning to install a 64-bit version of Windows make sure you download the right drivers for it, or else you might face a lot of problems while using your Windows.
Nowadays lots of laptops and desktops are manufactured with Windows 64-bit version pre-installed in it because it is cheaper and almost everyone is using it now.
We can say now, that in sometimes processors made for only 32-bit Operating System will be history.
I found the information interesting and easy to learn.
thanks a lott.
