Cent OS, commonly known as Community Enterprise Operating System is an open source operating system.
Cent OS meets all the RedHat’s redistribution requirements and is generally used in industries where people need a stable Operating System without certification and licensing costs. Cent OS is used mainly as webservers and for a span of 2 years it was the most popular Linux Distribution for webservers. Around 30% of all the Linux webservers were Cent OS.
So let us see how to install CentOS 6.4, the latest version.
- Install or Upgrade an existing system.
This is the first screen of CentOS installation. Select ‘Install or Upgrade an existing system’.
If your system crashed, you can select ‘Rescue Installed System.’ - Skip the media testing.
- Select Installation Language and keyboard layout.
- Select Basic Storage Devices.
- It will warn you that your hard disk is going to be formatted. Select ‘Yes, discard any data’
- Enter a hostname for your machine.
- Select your country,
- Enter root password. Remember this password, You’ll need it later.
- Installation type : Select custom layout.
you can use any one of the options, but here we are going to allocate ‘swap‘ and ‘/‘ manually so we will select custom layout. - Current summary of your hard disk.
Select free and click on create. - Swap and ‘/’
Select mount point as ‘swap’ and enter the size you want to give to Swap.
Select mount point as ‘/’ and you can manually specify the size of ‘/’ (If you want to keep some unallocated space) or you can select the third option ‘Fill to maximum allowable size’. - It will warn you before formatting. Select ‘Format’
Select ‘/’ and click on install.
- Select ‘Write changes to disk’
- Install Linux Bootloader.
- Installation process.
- Restart
- Create a new user. Enter your details.
