As Ubuntu is of Debian Operating System, Fedora is of RedHat operating System.
Fedora emphasizes more on making the Graphical User Interface more interactive and user-friendly. Generally people use two Linux Operating Systems in their home, Ubuntu Or Fedora.
Each have their own advantages and disadvantages.
in this post we are going to install Fedora 17, currently fedora 20 is in the market, but the installation has the same steps in each of its version.
You can download Fedora 20 from here. Once you get the image file, burn it to a DVD and Install it.
Lets see how to install Fedora 17. We are going to use a Live CD in this case.
- Start Fedora.
When you boot from live cd, select start fedora.
- Install to hard drive.
Since it is a live cd, it will ask you if you want to use fedora or install?
Click on install.
- Select your keyboard layout.
- Select basic storage devices.
- Select discard any data.
Note : This will delete all the data that is currently present.
- Enter Hostname.
- Select your location
- Enter root password.
- Custom Layout.
You can now select ‘use all space’ to use all the space that is available in your hard disk.
You can also select ‘replace existing Linux system’.
It will then search for any hard-disk with ext4 file system,and format it and install fedora on that.
If you select ‘use free space’ it means the unallocated/raw space, not the free space in your hard disk.
We will now go with Custom layout.
- Create ‘swap’ and ‘/’.
Select ‘/’ partition and click next. It will then ask you if you want to format the disk?
Click on format.
- Select write changes to disk.
- Install bootloader.
Install bootloader on the main hard disk ‘/dev/sda’
- Wait for installation to complete.
- Restart your machine.
- Welcome screen.
- Create a new user and set its password.
- Hardware Profile.
At the last step ‘hardware profile, it will give you a summary of your hardware and ask if you want to send this profile to ‘Smolt’.
You can select send profile or do not send profile from the radio button.
