Some System admins, who are not used to with Linux, or love the GUI of windows, or simply are just too used to with Windows, go for Windows Server. Although Windows Servers are easy to configure and the GUI makes it further easy, it’s still not secure than Linux. At least Windows 2003 wasn’t.
In this post, we will see how to install Windows 2003 server. We will be covering Windows 2008 server, and Windows 2012 R2 server in the upcoming posts.
Some of the features of Windows 2003 Server are :
- Windows 2003 had a new IIS 6.0 service added in it.
- Improvement in Active Directory and Group policy.
- It provides a backup system to restore lost files.
- Disk Management can now backup from shadows of files,
- WatchDog Timer, which restarts the server, if Operating System is not responding for a certain period.
Now let us see how to install Windows 2003 Server.
- Select which version you want to install.
We are going with 1 That isDatacenter Corp.
Select which server you want to install.
- Press enter to set up windows.
Press enter.
- Select your hard disk.
Since this is a virtual box hard disk, its empty. You can have various partitions here. Select the partition carefully, because windows will format it, and if you choose the wrong one, your data would be gone.
Install Windows on unpartitioned space. Press Enter.
- Format the partition using NTFS file system Quick
Format
- Wait till windows Formats the drive, and copies installation files.
Wait till setup copies files.
- Restart your machine
Manually restart by pressing enter or wait for 15 seconds till windows restarts itself.
Remove your cd now.
Restart your machine.
Remove CD - If you don’t remove, you will again come to this screen.
Since we have done with half of the installation, press ‘esc’ if you get this screen. It will then boot from hard-disk.
If you see this screen, press Esc.
- If you removed the cd or pressed ‘esc’ in the earlier step, you’ll get this screen.
Next step of installation.
- Now the installation process will start.

- Select your location/region.
Select your region and keyboard layout.
- Enter Admin’s name and Organization.
Enter Name
- Set and administrator password. Remember this password. You’ll have to enter it later to access your machine.
Enter password, and remember this.
- Enter time & date. And select your time zone.
Enter time zone.
- When installation finishes, reboot.
Now when system boots, you’ll see this instead of desktop.
In virtual machine to send ‘Ctrl+Alt+Del’ go to machine and click on ‘Insert Ctrl+Alt+Del’.
Press Ctrl + Alt + Del
- Enter password.
Enter Password.
- Check you machine.
