How to install Windows 7


What do you do when your machine is full of viruses?
Hanging every other time you try to do your work? Taking minutes and minutes to start an application!
You call an engineer and tell him to format the disk and Reinstall Windows 7 !

And for this small task, you spend around 350-400Rs! Well, so in this task we will learn this simple procedure of how to install Windows 7.
There are two ways, you can install Windows 7.

  1. Directly booting Windows 7 DVD.
  2. Inserting Windows 7 . And running the ‘setup.exe’ file.

If you’re planning to directly boot from Windows 7 DVD. You should select the Proper boot device by pressing F11 in Lenovo/Dell or F9 in case of HP machine, or ‘ESC’ in other Laptops.
Or you can change the boot priority, this is because your machine with an existing OS, will normally boot from hard-disk. So even if you have entered the DVD, it will boot from Hard-disk and bring you the Desktop.

1. When your Machine starts, you’ll see something like this.

2. If you press ‘ESC’ or ‘F9/F11’ here, you will see a screen like this :

3. You can either select F2 to enter SETUP and then change the boot priority or directly go for ‘boot menu’.
If you press F2, you will see a Setup page. Go to ‘Boot’ and change the Boot Order.

4. Save this Setting And Exit or simply press ‘F10’

5. If you decide to open it from My Computer, when you run the Setup, Select Install :

6. Setup will then copy some files into your memory before proceeding.

7. If you’re connected to the internet, it will ask you to use the latest Windows updates.
Select ‘Do not get the latest update’.

8. Accept the license and click on Next.

9. It will ask if you want to upgrade, select Custom Setup.
Upgrading will keep the files and just upgrade your current Windows to a newer version, like Home Basic Would be upgraded to Home Premium.

10. Select the Hard disk on which you want to install Windows 7.
If you select the wrong drive, the data on that Drive would be deleted and Windows 7 would be installed there,
and then you would have 2 Windows OS. One earlier and One new. So select the drive properly.

11. It will then tell you, Windows is creating a folder with Old User’s files in it.
A new folder named Windows.old would be created in that drive, having your old Program files and Documents.

If you don’t want this, you will find a ‘Format’ option beside ‘Refresh’ in the Previous Step.
Just format it first and then proceed with installation.

12. The real lengthy Installation process starts now.

Few Points to remember :

  1. Give your windows drive enough space to work properly, say about 60-80GB’s, because Windows 7 will take around 20GB, and the programs you will install after then will be around 5-10GB. Keep some free space.
  2. Don’t fill up your Desktop. Your Desktop is also part of C drive. If you keep movies on Desktop, you’re actually filling up your windows drive unknowingly.
  3. Install an Anti-virus, if you’re going to use Internet.
